About Elizabeth Edmondson
… who also writes as Elizabeth Aston
I was born in Chile to an impeccably English father and a distinctly un-English Argentine mother. Educated by Benedictine nuns in Calcutta, Fabians in London, and Inklings at Oxford, I’ve lived in India, England, Malta and Italy.
I write under two names, Elizabeth Edmondson (historical mysteries) and Elizabeth Aston (light hearted historical and contemporary romantic comedies).
I’ve always been fascinated by the complexities of family life, especially the secrets, violence and intrigues that lie beneath the smooth façade of twentieth-century upper class English families.
The mysteries which I write as Elizabeth Edmondson are set in the 1930s, with forays into the 40s and 50s, and in them the tense realities of life mingle with supernatural elements : ghosts, prophetic dreams and voices from the past.
My Elizabeth Aston novels are light-hearted romances and comedies of manners. The Mountjoy series were inspired by years of living in York, where my son was a chorister at the Minster, and depict the unholy, unquiet, and frequently unseemly goings-on of an imaginary northern cathedral city and its eccentric, aristocratic, musical and clerical inhabitants.
My other books include the bestselling Darcy series – six historical romantic comedies set in the world of Jane Austen, and a contemporary novel, Writing Jane Austen. These were inspired by my love of Jane Austen – her heroes, her heroines and her wicked sense of humour.
